Today Articulaciones recommends: Campaign "We are more"

 

"We are more": campaign set up by Culture Action Europe. "The ultimate goal of the campaign is to contribute to a strengthened recognition of the role of arts and culture in the development of our European societies."

Tensiones Video Art Program

In the second screening we can find artists as Itziar Barrio and Janet Biggs who look at different topics with a common denominator, the relationship between the individual and the community. Both approach the subject from different perspectives as the loneliness, the community. Barrio theorizes on the construction of an ideal world, using symbols that she extracts of context and taking them to another level of thought creating a new language according to the ideal World that she proposes. Whereas Biggs gives to the space an important role on her videos, she intersperses opened and closed spaces, the nature on its maximum magnificence with the meeting places of the community where the individual feels safe inside the group.

Carlos Irijalba focuses his attention on the representation of the nature. He understands the city as the natural environment of the human being. He alters the nature by exploring familiar objects and by playing with the amazing effects produced by removing those objects of their regular contexts. Some examples of the elements used by this artist are mirrors, cars, areas of lights, and the nature itself inserted in the city. The individual here acts as spectator of the proposed changes.

Finally, the works of Jose Carlos Casado takes us into worlds of power, fears and desire. His work is about "reality" and its perception. By exploring established roles, he investigates the boundaries of our beliefs, of feelings and what makes us accept what we see. For example, where does pleasure end and pain begin? Who is the victim and who the attacker?. Casado shows us glimpses of the crudeness and violence of the daily life and also the relation between fantasy and reality.

Tensiones Video Art Program

We start with the works of Esther Achaerandio, Alberto Borea, Antón Cabaleiro and Manuela Viera-Gallo.

The work of Esther Achaerandio approaches subjects as the individualism versus the collective and the sense of ourselves versus everybody else. We can clearly appreciate the impact of her studies on anthropology on her career development. Achaerandio also deals with other subjects as the loss of the individualism, the instability and the obstacles faced to develop an artistic career.

Other perspective about the perception of the self and the individual search of the truth is showed on the work of Alberto Borea. This search is a path for the introspection and the internalizing of feelings. He investigates the loneliness and the fight against oneself.

Antón Cabaleiro, who has the individual as the centre of his works, shows us a critic and ironic view of the individual from a humorous perspective. He deal with different tecnics trying to find a place inside the art world. His work approach the daily life throught the new technologies.

The last artist of this first screening is Manuela Viera-Gallo. Her work experiments with the relation and reaction between the audience and the work of art. She uses accepted social dogmas, politicals and culturals, extracting them of their context and segregating them into their elements, creating new experiences on the public.

Tensiones complements and reinforces with video-art projections the aim pursued by this project of showing the impact of the culture in the economy. It will give the opportunity to Spanish, Latin-American and American artists of showing their works during the conferences´ cycle.
